For this maximum-security federal penitentiary and minimum-security satellite camp, GRW served as the lead A/E design firm. Located in McCreary County, KY, the $124,000,000 prison includes 21 separate buildings totaling 533,000 SF.
The main campus plan places the six, two-story housing units, and program and multipurpose functions in a rectangular campus layout enclosing a centralized recreational area. In addition to the housing units, other campus buildings include food service, medical, warehouses, administrative, recreation, education, personal services, industrial/vocational, central utilities plant, and vehicle maintenance.
The project was divided into four design packages with interim schedules, which involved an early site work and building pad package to maintain the project schedule. All design packages met project deadlines, and the project was completed 15 days ahead of schedule.
